I tried to listen to The Way of Kings several years ago and bounced off it, but this time around it really sucked me in. Kaladin is as stereotypical as a hero can be, yet I can’t help cheering as he progresses from hypercompetent guy who always does the right thing to hypercompetent guy who always does the right thing even when he’s completely convinced it will be futile. The chasm-filled battlefield where armies use teams of conscripts to move portable bridges around is a nice premise.
